Description: Das Projekt "Sekundaerwaelder und Brachflaechenvegetation im oestlichen Amazonasgebiet" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH durchgeführt. Agricultural activities in the Eastern Amazon region have caused the replacement of tropical rainforest by secondary vegetation, which serves as fallow vegetation in the slash-and-burn agriculture of the local small-holders. However, because of increasing land-use intensity, the fallow vegetation is no longer accomplishing its primary function: the recovery of the land-use system's productivity. Therefore, the project ist based on the assumption that further development of traditional fallow systems could contribute to the ecological and economical stability of the small-holder's land-use system. The project is divided into seven subprojects: 1) Studies on the diversity of secondary vegetation, considering stand age, land-use intensity and agronomic practices. 2) Studies on the relation between phytomass production and soil conditions. 3) Studies on the importance of secondary vegetation for nutrient cycling in small-scale farming systems. 4) Studies on the regeneration and expansion of secondary vegetation. 5) Studies on generative reproduction and seedling establishment of ecologically or economically important tree and shrub species. 6) Studies on native secondary forest species with high N(2) fixing capacity. 7) Developing methods to produce planting material out of seeds and cuttings from selected species of primary and secondary forests.
