Ein europaeisches 'Biomaterialnetzwerk'

Description: Das Projekt "Ein europaeisches 'Biomaterialnetzwerk'" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht, Standort Geesthacht, Institut für Chemie durchgeführt. Innovation in the development and testing or materials for biomedical use is being supported at the European level by the EC predominatly through the medium of the Brite-EuRam Programme, but recently also through the SMT Programme relevant projects, which have already been assessed as matching IMT Programme, industrial objectives and hence EU policy in this field are currently under various stages of completion. lt is understood that others arc presently under evaluation. The overall goal of each project, the participants and their individual roles within each project are well known to the Commission DGXII Brite-EuRam or SMT Programme officers. Six of these (plus two others since completed earlier in 1996) have already been brought together through a Thematic Research Action Co-ordination project managed by BioBridge under contract from the EC (BRE2-CT94-l378). Whilst the projects have the common goal of improving the range and safety of materials available for medical use, their targets are as diverse as innovation in replacements for blood, new manufacturing methods for joint prostheses, tests for carcinogenic potential of implanted materials and development of new imaging particles. This diversity of individual targets and market sectors for products or technologies arising from the projects increases the challenge for efficient and mutually-beneficial technology interactions and dissemination between them and for development of appropriate technology-protection and commercialisation plans. In order to maximise the potential for these actions, this Targeted Research Action Network (TRA-N) type 2 is proposed. It is suggested that the proposed TRA-N be divided into three natural clusters: - hard materials, - soft materials, - methods of testing and manufacture. This takes into account, and conforms with, the overall aims of the projects, namely the generation pf: - new materials/devices for medical application with fewer problems, i.e. enhanced biocompatibility and safety, -new systems/methods for manufacturing materials or for testing performance and in-use safety.
