Analysis of mobile carbohydrate pools in Pinus sylvestris exposed to drought stress (Carbohydrate pools in Scots pine)

Description: Das Projekt "Analysis of mobile carbohydrate pools in Pinus sylvestris exposed to drought stress (Carbohydrate pools in Scots pine)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Innsbruck, Institut für Botanik, Abteilung für Systematik, Palynologie und Geobotanik durchgeführt. In the last decades high mortality of Pinus sylvestris has been observed in inner Alpine dry valleys. It is well founded, that more frequent drought stress induced pathogen and insect infestation due to climate warming were main reason of the increasing tree mortality. NSC (Non Structural Carbohydrate) pools provide energy for growth and synthesis and can be assumed an important factor in response to infection by pathogens and regarding susceptibility to insect infestation. Drought stress can cause a depleting of NSC-pools due to constrained photosynthesis in combination with high respiration rates. We propose a monitoring of the climate driven variability of NSC pools in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris, L.) at a dry site in the Inn-valley. This analyses will help to enlighten the coherence of drought stress and carbohydrate status of trees and can therefore provide important data to identify the key-factors promoting pathogen infestation and Scots pine mortality.
