Interreg V B North Sea Region: Building with Nature, Balancing Sediment Deficits in the Wadden Sea (BASEWAD)

Description: Within the Interreg VB project 'Building with nature' (BwN), through demonstration projects and exchange of experience, the hypothesis already represented by the EU, that 'Building with nature' in the flood and coastal risk management can contribute to a sustainable climate change adaptation, will be tested and confirmed. The associated sub-project BASEWAD analyses the Sylt shoreface nourishment regarding their effects in the Wadden Sea. Therefore, hydro-morphological field investigations and hydro-morphodynamic modelling are performed. The aim is to examine whether and to what extend the implemented sand in front of and at the west coast of Sylt benefits the Wadden Sea due to rearrangement processes. Further aims are to evaluate to what extend and at which locations the Wadden Sea grows due to the nourishments and if there develop areas due to the rearrangement of the sand where an ecologically friendly withdrawal of sand for other measures would be possible. Additionally, biological studies of the ecological effects are conducted. The interdisciplinary project BASEWAD constitutes a main element of the 'Strategy Wadden Sea 2100', which aims to preserve the Wadden Sea in its uniqueness as well as its growing with the sea-level rise.
