Description: Das Projekt "The impact of plant colonizing soil microrganisms on the invasion success of the maize pest Diabrotica virgifera virgifera" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Göttingen, Institut für Pflanzenpathologie und Pflanzenschutz durchgeführt. This project evaluates the impact of soil borne funghi on the root feeding larvae of Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte mediated by the host plant Zea mays L.. These root colonizing funghi belong to three different functional groups with regard to the effect on the plant: 1. Positively acting mycorrhiza, 2. Neutrally acting endophytes, 3. Negatively acting pathogens, by using one species of fungi from each of these three groups we are testing the effects of fungi colonization of the host plant of the herbivore. After a specific inoculation and colonization time roots are fed to larvae of D. v. virgifera and the impact is measured. Larval performance is measured as larval weight gain, amount of feeding and the resulting food conversion efficiency. Furthermore biochemical parameters of the roots will be assessed.
