Description: Das Projekt "Entwicklung von Werkzeugen zur Diagnose und Therapie durch das Gentechnikverfahren 'Electric Field Pulse Techniques'" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Würzburg, Biozentrum, Lehrstuhl für Biotechnologie durchgeführt. The ability to change the properties of cells by genetic engineering has led to the development of highly sensitive tools to detect genetic disorders on the cellular and membrane level. The conventional fusion and gene transfer techniques which largely use chemicals or inactivated virus are not always very efficient and are founded partially on an empirical basis. The development of electrical field pulse methods for in vitro cell fusion and for DNA transfer across biological membranes by the Institute of Biotechnology at the University Wuerzburg may well represent an interesting alternative to the conventional methods since they allow the processes of fusion and gene transfer to be monitored by optical means and to be controlled by precise techniques based on physical principles. The technique can be used in the detection and identification of chromosomal aberrations induced by mutagenic and clastogenic agents or by irradiation. Techniques such as electrostimulation and electro-rotation which were recently developed for growth stimulation of cultured cells and for recognition of membrane and cellular properties may offer a promising way to solve theses problems and requirements. Both the latter techniques are closely linked from an apparative and theoretical standpoint to electrofusion and electrotransfection. The electric field techniques are therefore expected, to allow the health care of the Egyptian people to be improved at relatively low cost. Cooperation between the Institute of Biotechnology, Wuerzburg and the Human Genetics Department of the University of Alexandria has been involved in public health services for a long time.
