Description: Das Projekt "Soziobiologie von Ameisen des tropischen Regenwaldes" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Frankfurt, Fachbereich Biologie, Zoologisches Institut, Arbeitsgruppe Ethoökologie durchgeführt. 1) Studies on the ecotype army ant in the genus Leptogenys of the ant subfamily Ponerinae indepently from the 3 true army ant subfamilies species with army ant live habits have developed. We are performing comperative studies on sociobiology of these mass hunting ant species. Additionally single and group hunting Leptogenys species are investigated. 2) Mutualism between ants and phytophagous insects and between ants and plants. Some years ago we have discovered the new ant live habit migrating herdsmen in the ant genus Dolichoderus in South-East Asia. Recently we are performing comperative studies on sympatric living herdsmen. We are performing studies on the ecology of several ant-plant associations in SE-Asian rainforests: a) Maranga/Crematogaster; b) Saracca/Cladomyrma; c) Korthalsia/Camponotus. 3) How ants get access to the rain forest canopy by nest construction. Nesting space is a limiting factor for ants in the canopy of tropical rainforest. We are studying which ants are getting access to the canopy region by building actively free hanging carton and silk nests.
