Description: Das Projekt "Auf Recycling orientierte Strategien bei der Herstellung von Papierzellstoff und fuer Papierhersteller" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Papiertechnische Stiftung München durchgeführt. Scientific Objectives: The project focused on the influences of the vital processes and additives of papermaking on the value of the finished paper with regard to its suitability as a future raw material for the paper industry. These included above all those processes which directly or indirectly influence the fibre properties during pulp production (beating, bleaching) or during web forming (wet end chemistry), drying and surface treatment (coating, calendebdering). In addition further effects were assessed which are expected to occur in the wake of intensified recycling, namely the accumulation of contaminants in papers with high secondary fibre contents. An investigation into the relations between papermaking processes and waste paper properties yielded the fundamentals of recycting-oriented paper manufacture. Discussion of Work and Achievements: The project studied for the first time the effects of processes and additives used in pulp and paper manufacture on the quality of the raw material 'waste paper' in terms of recyclability, cleanliness, brightness and strength. In addition an assessment was made of the increased contaminants accumulation in secondary fibre based new papers which is the inevitable consequence of intensified recycling. Only a selected number of processes were studied in view of the large variety of paper manufacturing processes. These selected processes represent the majority of wastepaper treatment and similar processes. Each partner to the project defined the specific set-ups for the different trials to be carried out during the various tasks. This included variations, e.g. in machinery for dispersion (Task 1), in wet-end chemicals used for paper manufacturing (Task 2) and in drying temperatures (Task 3).
