Description: Das Projekt "Ecological consequences of a comb jelly invasion for the Mediterranean-area (Black-Azov Seas)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Stiftung Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung, Biologische Anstalt Helgoland durchgeführt. General Information: The Azov and Black Seas ecosystems which exposed of strong impact by Atlantic comb jelly (Mnemiopsis l.) invader are the objects of this research. The main objective of this investigation is the study of the regularities of the plankton communities changes, as well as changes in fish productivity and stocks within the ecosystems caused by the ctenophore invasion and biomanipulation(fishery including), mathematical modelling of the mechanisms determining the structure and stability of the pelagic ecosystems trophic webs affected by the environment changes and catches. A problem of understanding the mechanisms and regularities, as well as assessment and forecast of sequences of such an invasion is obviously of a great deal interest, and results of this research could be of very important for other ecosystems. Thus, another purpose is the development of a software package for theoretical and applied research of the multispecies communities of aquatic animals, simulation and forecast of the fish stocks under various scenarios environmental changes and biomanipulation. The participants will publish the results of the research activity and will develop and maintain joint WEB page during the project extion.
