FlexiFuelGasControl: Increased fuel flexibility and modulation capability of fixed-bed biomass gasifiers by means of model based control

Description: Das Projekt "FlexiFuelGasControl: Increased fuel flexibility and modulation capability of fixed-bed biomass gasifiers by means of model based control" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Bioenergy 2020+ GmbH, Firmensitz Graz durchgeführt. Because of increased efforts to reduce CO2-emissions the energetic utilization of biomass got very important within the last decades. In the last years a strong focus of research and development was given to biomass gasification since the resulting combustible product gas gives very high flexibility. For small-scale applications especially the technology of fixed-bed gasification is of big importance. Fixed-bed biomass gasification enables an efficient possibility for the combined production of heat and power in a scale where this is not economical feasible with combustion based CHP systems. However, a robust practical operation of state-of-the-art fixed-bed biomass gasification systems is limited to very specific fuel properties and steady operation what is the main barrier on the way towards a wider market distribution at the moment. To increase the fuel flexibility respectively load modulation capability of fixed-bed gasification systems in particular a significant improvement of their control systems is necessary. The most promising attempt to improve the control is the development of a model-based control strategy able to consider all the couplings and nonlinear correlations of the different process variables. Thus, the overall aim of this project is to develop a model-based control strategy for fixed-bed biomass gasification systems in order to increase their fuel flexibility as well as their load modulation capability. Both improvements by the new control - the increased fuel flexibility as well as increased load modulation capability - would increase the economic value of fixed-bed biomass gasification systems and consequently their competitiveness. The market potential for the biomass gasification technology considered in this project is extremely high since they would be suitable for big range of operators.
