Description: Das Projekt "Processes relevant to global change-improvements and access to a large simulation chamber (IALSI)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Heidelberg, Institut für Umweltphysik durchgeführt. The research objectives are focused on two topics and can be summarised as follows: Topic A Technological improvement of the existing simulation chambers infrastructure at the host institute. The recently developed and worldwide unique installation of radical measurement techniques in an outdoor smog chamber, with its excellent potential for obtaining direct insight into radical formation and radical cycling processes, requires further improvement in the precision and quality of the applied analytical methods and the facility hardware. The technical part of this improvement will be achieved by automation of the calibration processes so far employed, automation of sampling systems, e.g. for DNPH-coated cartridges for carbonyl analysis, and hydroperoxides and intercomparison with other measurement techniques. Quality control measures of the recorded data on photosmog experiments based on inter-comparison of methods and methodologies will be implemented in order to get a set of quality-assured data for the experiments performed in this installation. Topic B The improvements on the hardware side will be accompanied by a better organisational structure to facilitate the access of external users to the installation and hence increase the exploitation of the installation. The group will provide within the execution time of the project additional analytical tools to favour and ease the use by external scientists. The complexity of the installation as well as the processes needed for data analysis will be well described and documented. This detailed description of the experimental procedures to use this facility will make the use transparent for external scientists so that they will gain the possibility to conduct experiments in the simulation chambers with a minimum of pre-knowledge on the analytical tools. To achieve this objective the following tools will be developed and provided: - Database of system dependent data to analyse chamber runs (IR- cross-section, UV-cross-sections, Chamber dependent data, etc.). - Standardised methodology for data evaluation (Data Evaluation Protocol). - Modelling system (Easy Web-based access of external users for further data treatment by numerical modelling). - Tool for mechanistic development and treatment of chamber data - based primarly on MCM. - Web-Site for collaborative interpretation and exchange of data on simulation chamber runs. - Database on quality controlled chamber runs. This database will contain concentration-time profiles for the species analysed. A Metafile will be added which contains all necessary information to trace back the analysis procedures employed and the calibration procedures used for monitors and chromatographic systems. - Database on scientific results obtained using the installation. This database will have a metafile structure, which allows results to be backtracked, e.g. a rate coefficient, to the individual experiments performed to extract this result. ...
