Exzellenzcluster 80 (EXC): Ozean der Zukunft

Description: Das Projekt "Exzellenzcluster 80 (EXC): Ozean der Zukunft" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Fachhochschule Kiel, Institut für Mechatronik durchgeführt. The Future Ocean project dearX (started in March 2007) has shown that electronic data formats based on the Geography Markup Language (GML) are a good choice for marine measurement data. In GML the real world is digitally represented as a set of features. A geographic feature is an abstraction of a real world phenomenon; it is a geographic feature if it is associated with a location relative to the Earth . For this purpose, GML offers a generic set of formal grammars (provided as so-called XML schemas) that define structures and datatypes for all kinds of geographic data including geometries, coordinate reference systems, topology, temporal information, units of measurement, etc. On top of these basic schemas GML Application Schemas can be created that are tailored to a specific subject area. Currently these GML application schemas are handwritten. This task requires an in-depth knowledge of XML and GML. It would be preferable if researchers planning to collect measurement data could create these documents themselves without needing help from a computer scientist and were supported by related tools during all stages of data collection.
