Description: Das Projekt "Testing methods for self-monitoring of air sampling instruments" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von DMT-Gesellschaft für Forschung und Prüfung Bochum durchgeführt. Objective: To ensure the reliability of air monitoring in deep coal mines, the instruments used must be meticulously checked. The objective of the project was to reduce the burden of weekly control measurements and at the same time obtain faster information on any incident recorded by instruments. General Information: An instrument offering quasi separate operation of two identical sensors was developed. This allows the comparison, in preset cycles, of the values measured by two measuring bridges which are fitted with identical sensors but which are operated alternatively with different operating durations, in order to obtain different behaviour of the sensors for the purposes of comparison. In addition to a comparison of two measuring bridges, which merely provides a general indication of an incorrect measurement, a pointer to the faculty sensor was to be obtained by means of an appropriate test routine. This individual testing of the measuring bridges was to be undertaken by means of a working point check after temporarily increasing the bridge current. Achievements: The tests carried out with two different sensor types with the same measuring characteristics did not yield the anticipated results. Comparison of the values measured is possible, but this can also be done using a computer which, in addition to comparing the measurement signals, also controls the instruments to be compared. Individual testing of sensors to check whether they are functioning properly is also possible in principle. One of the sensor types tested (Nucletron VQ 24) can be checked using the envisaged testing system, but is not approved for use in mining. On the other hand, the features of the sensor approved for use in mining (Auer Ex Trans) in respect of the operating point are unsuited to reliable individual testing. It also emerged that the equivalence comparator according to Hennesen does not perform its function. As a result, the cost of introducing a new monitoring instrument for coal mining would appear to be out of proportion. A new instrument will be of interest only when approved sensors with suitable operating point characteristics are available. It was therefore decided not to start the approval procedure for intrinsically safe operation of the measuring and monitoring device.
