Description: Das Projekt "Interaktion von Aquifer und Oberflaechenwasser entlang von Jordan und Totem Meer (Deutsch-Israelisch-Jordanisch-Palaestinensisches Forschungsprogramm zur nachhaltigen Nutzung von Aquifer-Systemen)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Tübingen, Institut und Museum für Geologie und Paläontologie, Lehrstuhl für Angewandte Geologie durchgeführt. It is planned to construct a variable-density groundwater flow model that simulates the flow through the Eastern aquifer (West Bank) and the flow between the two aquifer sub-systems and the rift valley. It had been shown that within the Lower Aquifer saline water exists. Further, in the area of the Jordan River, high salinity brines mix with fresh water of the Eastern Aquifer and the highly saline water of the Dead Sea forms an interface with the fresh groundwater. The different hydrogeological settings, with the Jordan River and the Dead Sea as base levels require that two different groundwater models have to be constructed, one in the North with the Jordan River as outflow level and one in the South with the Dead Sea as the drainage level. These two groundwater flow models are believed to provide an improved understanding of the flow system and it is exploitation management of the groundwater of the Eastern aquifer. They will also help to develop apropriate pumping strategies in order to keep the salinity of the pumped water at a minimum.
