Objective: Study of the fate of heavy metals during paper and board production. General Information: Potential sources of heavy metals in paper and board industry, like cooking liquors, sodium hydroxide, aqueous chlorine solutions during pulping and bleaching, machinery corrosion and different diffuse substances during recycling, are investigated and possibly quantified in terms of heavy metals, e.g. Cd, Hg, Pb, Cr, enrichment in paper and board. This is due to the fact that cellulose fibres have active, negatively charged groups on their surface which are likely to bind and exchange metal ions. Thus virgin fibres as well as recycled fibres come into contact with heavy metals which can be found in the above mentioned substances and solutions needed for producing paper. Several paper mills are examined and metal concentrations in the produced paper as well as in the raw material are measured.
