Description: Das Projekt "Untersuchung des Oberflaechenstrahlungshaushaltes in den Alpen und im Vergleich zum Schweizerischen Mittelland" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos und Weltstrahlungszentrum (PMOD,WRC) durchgeführt. Improvement of the understanding of the SRB (Surface Radiation Budget) in general and its dependence on elevation in particular. The water vapor content depends strongly on temperature (exponentially) and is one of the most important feedback factors in the increased greenhouse scenario of future climate change. Due to the water vapor a rather strong dependence of the SRB on elevation is expected and thus also a strong variation of the effective greenhouse effect due to the increase of the trace gases. This effect may change the effect of the globally increased greenhouse effect locally in the alpine region and in turn influence the global picture on this region. The cloud forcing of the SRB is a further, rather badly understood problem, which will be addressed. This will substantially influence the effect of global change on Switzerland in particular and the regions adjacent to the alps in a more general sense. The detailed knowledge of the elevation dependence of the SRB will improve parametrization of the energy and radiation balance at the surface and hitherto the regional and global climate models. A major problem is still the instrumentation. Part of the project will deal with the development of calibration schemes and the detailed characterization of the instruments to be used. Test stations will be established in Davos and at the Weissfluhjoch before the alpine stations will be instrumented.
