Description: Das Projekt "Exzellenzcluster 80 (EXC): Ozean der Zukunft" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel (GEOMAR), Forschungsbereich 1: Ozeanzirkulation und Klimadynamik, Forschungseinheit Paläo-Ozeanographie durchgeführt. Species richness and ecological niches for planktonic organisms in the surface ocean are threatened by the increasing influence of rising CO2 levels and climate change. For instance, the absorption of 50% of fossil fuel CO2 emissions will effect an estimated pH drop of more than 0.7 units in surface waters (Caldeira and Wickett, 2003). This acidifi-cation will decrease the calcification capability of calcareous planktonic organisms (Riebesell et al. 2000). It may be anticipated that ocean acidification will also reduce the geographical extension of many marine organisms (Guinotte et al. 2003). However, the impacts on ecosystems of calcareous plankton are largely unknown. The adaptations of marine biota have consequences for the validity of paleoceanographical reconstructions by proxy data, for instance stable oxygen and carbon isotopes, planktonic foraminiferal or coccolith assemblage compositions, and trace metal compositions of carbonate shells. These proxies were calibrated with reference sets of sea floor samples and hydrographic data, both collected in the 1960s to 1980s. It is evident that the ongoing climatic changes necessitate an adjustment of proxy calibrations and a re-assessment planktonic habitat structures.
