Description: Das Projekt "Three-dimensional groundwater flow and salinity transport model of Ras Sedr City for sustainable management of water resources and ecosystem services" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Technische Universität Berlin, Institut für Bauingenieurwesen, Fachgebiet Wasserwirtschaft und Hydrosystemmodellierung durchgeführt. Motivation: MicrosoftInternetExplorer402DocumentNotSpecified7.8Normal0Ras Sedr is one of the closest cities of South Sinai to the capital Cairo (180 km) and through its location, climate and land topography provides a suitable environment for the development of various activities such as tourism and agriculture. The groundwater in the Quaternary aquifer (which is the most prospective aquifer in Ras Sedr area) as well as the Nubian Sandstone aquifer serve as potential sources of water to supply the water needs for the expected development. The importance of Ras Sedr further arises from the remarkable location on the eastern side of Gulf of Suez which is part of the mega development project Suez Canal Corridor (SCC) which aims to develop the area surrounding the Suez Canal vital waterway. Integrated sustainable management of the water resources becomes an obligation as well as a practical solution to confront the water scarcity problem in the region and help realize the development plans. Research Aim and Methodology: MicrosoftInternetExplorer402DocumentNotSpecified7.8Normal0The main research aim is to improve understanding the groundwater flow and salinity transport processes in Ras Sedr City, to manage the groundwater resources sustainably and to plan the establishment of ecosystem services related to sustainable management of groundwater. The main research aim will be attained through developing an integrated three dimensional groundwater flow and salinity transport model of Ras Sedr City to manage the groundwater resources and ecosystem services sustainably. The 3D numerical model will be developed after reviewing previous studies, collecting respective data and constructing geo-referenced database and thematic maps of the study area. Using spatial analysis techniques as well the model results, various scenarios of the groundwater management and ecosystem services plans are proposed and assessed.
