Description: Das Projekt "Conversion of a retaining weir for electricity production using an inflatable crest weir" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Saalachkraftwerk Ainring GmbH & Co., Elektrizitätswerk durchgeführt. Objective: To demonstrate how, using relatively simple techniques, existing weirs built for flood control and river bed protection can be exploited for electricity production. General Information: A 50 metre wide weir is being fitted with an inflatable extension to give an extra head of 0.9 metres, and two turbines are being installed at a new hydro installation at the side of the weir. Other innovations include a special Detritus disposal channel, an automatic screen cleaning device and an aeration device in the turbines. The whole installation has been carefully designed to merge in with the surroundings. Head 5,6 metres Flow 2 x 26,5 m3/s + 2,65 m3/s = rd. 56 m3/s Turbine 2 Kaplan + 1 Francis Turbine power (each) 2000 kW Turbine speed 750 rpm Generator synchronous Generator speed 600 rpm End-use grid connected Achievements: Some problems were encountered removing old concrete and with dewatering whilst building the power house foundations, and there was a delay caused because approval for the water rights took longer than expected. There have also been some problems with the inflatable weir, which can be subject to severe oscillations at high water: investigation are continuing to overcome this problem. Prime Contractor: Saalachkraftwerk Ainring GmbH; Ainring; Germany.
