Description: Das Projekt "Anwendung eines numerischen Modells zur Berechnung der nicht-isothermalen Aufbereitung bei einem In-situ-Bodenbelueftungsverfahren" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH), Institut für Terrestrische Ökologie, Arbeitsgruppe Bodenschutz durchgeführt. The objective of this project is to evaluate the potential of numerical modelling as a tool to design, control and survey soil cleaning operations in which volatile contaminants are removed by artificial soil venting. A two dimensional model has been developped to compute steady-state temperature distribution, steady-state gas flow and non isothermal recovery of volatile hydrocarbons from the soil venting operations. The model assumes negligible effects from the water phase and an immobile non-aqueous phase as a source of contamination. This model is tested in a case study. First gasflow and transport predictions with parameter estimations from primary soil morphological data were compared with measured data on contaminant recovery and pressure distribution. Secondly, field ventilation experiments were performed to analyze the gasflow dynamics of the soil. The results indicate that partitioning of the flow region in mobile and immobile zones has a dominant influence on the efficiency of the venting operation. In a third step, the model is used to evaluate the benefits of hot air ventilation at the test site.
