Vergleichende Untersuchungen zur Aetiologie des Waldsterbens an geschaedigten Koniferen und Buchen aus Waldschadensgebieten und Klimakammerversuchen

Description: Das Projekt "Vergleichende Untersuchungen zur Aetiologie des Waldsterbens an geschaedigten Koniferen und Buchen aus Waldschadensgebieten und Klimakammerversuchen" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität-Gesamthochschule Essen, Fachbereich 9 Architektur, Bio- und Geowissenschaften, Institut für Angewandte Botanik durchgeführt. The dramatic deterioration of health and useful ecologically and economically important tree species such as Norway spruce and Red beech over large areas of the Federal Republic of Germany makes urgent research on the etiology of forest-decline necessary. The development of experimental methodology for this project is based on the following factors: 1) The Type, distribution, rate of development and extent of damage indicate that air pollutants are primary cause of forest-decline. 2) Based on the degree of phytotoxicity, photochemical oxidants, sulfur oxides and acidic rain are of primary interest. 3) Modification of the cuticula and membrane permeability can result from action of acidic gases as well as ozone. 4) Sunlight plays an apparent role in the development of certain symptons. 5) Frost and drought stress can be important factors in some areas. Based on this understanding and evaluation of the problem we have developed the following research program. 1. Effects of sulfur dioxide and ozone alone and in combination will be investigated in controlled-environment chambers. 2. Effects-criteria include symptoms, physiological and substructural characteristics. 3. To determine the effects of frost and drought stress, some experiments will be carried out under extreme climatic conditions. 4. Electron microscopic, physiological and biochemical analysis of needles from Picea abies (L.) Karst. from injured forest stands in the areas of Eggegebirge, Kaufunger Wald, Fichtelgebirge and Schwarzwald are planned to determine effects of pollutants at a cellular and subcellular level. Comparisions of these results with those of the growth chamber studies are etc.
