Description: Das Projekt "Luftverschmutzung in staedtischen Bereichen" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Trier, European Association for Environmental Management Education - Focal Point Trier -, Europäisches Diplom in Umweltwissenschaften durchgeführt. Nowadays, urban air pollution is a problem that the majority of European cities have to cope with. The main goal of this project is the creation of a tool to support decision making on measures regarding the reduction of the atmospheric pollution and the creation of a more healthy and less polluted environment for the inhabitants. The first part of this study describes the existing situation of urban air pollution and identifies the main sources and effects of it on human beings and on the environment. This part also includes the theoretical analyses of the tools to be used to support the decision making process inducing Decision Support Systems (DSS) and dispersion models. In the second part two European cities, Athens (Greece) and Toulouse (France), are selected as care study areas. All the required data for these cities are imported into a database, scenarios are defined and with the aid of the appropriate dispersion model, the air pollution behavior of these cities is examined. Furthermore, the situation of air pollution in the urban fabric is examined and evaluated with the aid of a Decision Support Systems (DSS), considering model results as well as demographic data and the stakeholder points of view. Finally after the examination of the results specific action plans to improve urban air quality are evaluated.
