Description: Das Projekt "Diffuse Emissionen fester Brennstoffe (Kohle), Emissionen von Grubengas aus stillgelegten Bergwerken; Potenzial zur Freisetzung und Verwertung von Grubengas" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von DMT GmbH & Co. KG durchgeführt. Problem definition: Continuous improvements have been made since a quality management system (Quality System of Emissions, QSE) was introduced in 2003 in order to improve emissions reporting and to improve the reliability and reviewability of emissions data and inventories. Emissions from the coal industry, in particular hard coal mining, must be included in the inventory, modelled, quality assured and both technical and written verification provided in order to meet the requirements of the international review processes and quality management. That involves determining emissions factors geared to German conditions, as well as production/activity rates, including uncertainties, and calculating emissions for each year since 1990. Whilst compiling the inventory for emissions reporting on the year 2007 it became clear that more precise data were required for source category 1.B.1.c (abandoned coal mines). Although the previous methodology and the methods of calculation applied were only in part queried during review procedures, the results of the quality control using QSE (checklists) showed that the roughly estimated emissions needed to be replaced by more easily traceable data, and uncertainties needed to be specified. As regards the emissions inventory it is important that the quantity of gases emitted on account of weather conditions, leaking plant components, and from scored rock are determined. The quality of the data on potential gas emissions (currently an estimate) and the recovery of mine gas extracted from abandoned mines (plant-related measurements) vary considerably. That is why suitable methods of calculation need to be developed in order to improve emissions reporting in that regard. 2. Subject matter of the project: The subject matter of this project is the source category 1.B.1.c (abandoned coal mining industry). The objective is to investigate the potential gas emissions and the methane and CO2 emissions from abandoned coal mines in Germany in connection with ventilation, mine gas extraction (from seam / mining), sumping, flow of mine gas (mining / scored rock), leak tightness of a mine and other anthropogenic influences. It is recommended to involve the Federal Association of the German Coal Mining Industries (GVSt) in the project execution. In accordance with its voluntary commitment, the GVSt records and forwards data - primarily on active hard coal mining - on an annual basis for the purposes of emission calculation. 3. Objective of the project: The objective of the project is to be able to compile improved, comprehensive and high-quality inventories with few uncertainties and reports for the source category 1.B.1. (solid fuels) in Germany. Recommendations from previous international review processes on German emissions reporting will thereby be incorporated and the quality of the overall inventory considerably increased.
