Description: Das Projekt "Sustainable measures for industrial laundry expansion strategies: SMART Laundry 2015 (SMILES)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Federatie van de Belgische Textielverzorging durchgeführt. In the project SMILES which was carried out in cooperation with 14 other project partners from different European countries, 16 key technologies concerning reduction of water and energy as well as CO2 reduction in professional laundries were investigated. For reducing the water consumption in laundries, different treatment technologies for process water with a low organic load were examined. Investigations focused on de-gradation of organic compounds by electrochemical treatment with application of boron doped diamond electrodes and by using photocatalytic nano-systems. Regarding the transfer of those results into laundry practice additional research work is necessary, especially concerning the minimization of floor space requirement and of energy as well as auxiliary agents. Further investigations on reduction of detergent consumption focused on partial replacement of conventional fossil-based detergents by bio-based enzymes (e.g. proteases, lipases), which are effective as catalysts at low washing temperatures (20 °C) and in very low concentrations. Depending on the type of stains, reduction of detergent dosage without decreased cleaning performance was possible in lab scale investigations by adding a mixture of different suitable enzymes. Enzyme application is not only suitable for high temperature level because selected enzymes are also active at lower temperatures. Based on the results an integrated concept of the industrial EU Smart Laundry-2015 was developed. It is presented as a web based simulation tool in which individual launderers can calculate cost savings of different combinations of the 16 key technologies in their own local situation. Furthermore the final report gives an overview of industrially applicable technologies with high saving potential. Those technologies are 'direct gas heated laundry', 'new drying technologies' and 'water reuse'.
