Description: Das Projekt "Untersuchungen des biologischen Potentials von Pflanzenschutzmitteln auf Unkraeuter europaeischer Herkunft" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control, European Station durchgeführt. During the past 30 years chemical herbicides have dominated weed control, but increased interest in biological weed control has developed since about 1960. The main reasons for this development are negative cost/benefit rates for the application of chemical herbicides especially in low profit exploitation, adverse effects of herbicide use on the environnement, development of resistance and population shifts towards weeds which are more difficult to control with chemicals. - Biological weed control has been employed for over 100 years, especially in Australia, New Zealand and North America. The objective of biological weed control ist not the eradication of weeds but the reduction of weed density at a sub-economic level. - The aim of the project is to study the organisms associated with important weed species of European origin, to select potential biological control agents, study their biology, ecology and host specificity and to supply release populations for North America. - During project work, the knowledge of organisms associated with weed in Europe is improved and can be used later on in Europe in integrated weed control.
