Description: Das Projekt "Charakterisierung von Bergwerksstaeuben entsprechend ihrer spezifischen Toxizitaet (Staubmessung)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von DMT-Gesellschaft für Forschung und Prüfung, Institut für Bewetterung, Klimatisierung und Staubbekämpfung durchgeführt. General Information: Work will take the form of adjoined project in several stages. In the initial two-year stage, wide-ranging mineral logical, petrographic and morphological tests were carried out on dusts from three stratigraphic horizons of Ruhr coal and two of Saar coal, using new analysis techniques such as electron microscope (STEM) and laser mass spectrometry (LAMMA) (Research project 7260-03/40/01). The present project will involve taking dust samples with the BAT II from other horizons in which there is no apparent correlation between the incidence of pneumoconiosis and the mineral composition of dust and its quartz content; and from horizons of plutonically formed coal. In addition to the usual mineral data, the samples will undergo individual particle analysis (Electron microscope and LAMMA) to obtain information on element composition and particle structure which will give a clearer picture of the reactions induced by these particles in a biological medium than will data on the sample taken as a whole. In this way, we hope to establish firmer correlations between the physical parameters and the results of in vitro and in vivo tests than has so far been possible. The medical programme will initially involve in vitro tests to select dusts of similar mineral composition which show particularly striking differences in specific toxicity. Only the dusts thus selected will be used for the in vivo tests. The research will be applied to actual mining conditions by comparing the results of in vitro and in vivo tests with those of epidemiological research involving miners who have worked in particular coal horizons.
