Objective: 1) To improve knowledge of the interrelation between exposure to an internal dose of thallium. 2) To study the effects of the metals selected on the central nervous system. 3) Exposure to and excretion of thallium. General Information: Three groups of people living in Northrine-Westpahlia are selected. One group lives in an area with relatively high levels of thallium in the environment; the other two are control groups. The food consumption and urinary excretion of thallium is examined in each group. Behavioural effects of metals in rats. The first part of this study deals with the combined effects of lead with carbon monoxide and with cadmium, respectively. Neurobehavioral effects are assessed, by means of avoidance-conditioning techniques. The observed behavioural effects are correlated with glial, neural or vascular changes in the brain. The second part of the study is comprised of prenetal administration of thallium by repeated S.C.-injections. The adult offspring is examined for discrimination - learning and open field-behaviour.
