Description: Das Projekt "Beheizung eines Kurkomplexes mit geothermaler Energie" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Stadtverwaltung Bad Waldsee durchgeführt. Objective: The use of geothermal energy to heat a health resort complex. The present total requirements of the existing heating plant is 14,500 Mwh, of which geothermal energy will meet +- 86 per cent. Project design suggests primary energy savings of 900 TOE/y with a corresponding payback of 10-20 years. General Information: The main target is the Karstic limestone (Malm) lying at 1,600-1,800 m with a 70 m3/h flow rate at 70 deg C. If the Malm strata is not sufficiently productive a layer of Muschelkalk at 2,300-2,500 m of 30 m3/h flow rate at 80-85 deg C will become the main target. An injection well is planned to maintain aquifer pressure. The geothermal station will be comprised of storage tank, heat exchanger and heat pump (at 20 deg C). District heating return line temperature has to be reduced to 90 deg C maximum. The production well was drilled to a final depth of 2,322 m between February and August 1985 and due to the loss of a pipe during a pumping test in the Malm limestone, sidetracking became necessary. The pumping test showed a productivity index of 0,15 m3/h/kg/cm2 after acidizing. Due to impermeability in the formation the well was deepened to 2,197 M (shell limestone Muschelkalk). A 7' liner was cemented from 1,490 to 2,197 m. The shell limestone was sunk with a 6' bit and tested through a 5' slotted liner. The Muschelkalk formation's productivity index appears to be 10 times lower than that of the Malm formation. As a result the well was cemented to 750 m and the upper molasse developed by perforation. In-flow sections are from 452-574 m producing 26 m3/h of saline water at 31 deg C with a corresponding draw down of 44 m (Ip = 5.9 m3/h/kg/cm2). Achievements: The project is unsuccessful since the lack of permeability in both reservoirs is insufficient for production. However, from the experience gained in the drilling of several oil exploration wells in the area, resulting mud losses have led to the conclusion that the limestone may be productive in certain areas. The aquifer present in the upper Molasse is of good transmissivity and a well completed with screens and gravel pack will produce 100 m3/h with an economical draw down.
