Description: Das Projekt "Identifizierung sensitiver Marker-Gene - Identifikation von Ziel- und Markergenen endokriner wirksamer Umweltchemikalien im Modellorganismus Medaka (Oryzias latipes)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Umweltforschungszentrum Leipzig-Halle GmbH, Department Zelltoxikologie durchgeführt. A wide range of chemicals released into the aquatic environment have been shown to interact with hormonal functions of vertebrates and interfere with their differentiation and reproduction. Due to their lability towards hormones in sexual differentiation and determination fish are primary risk organism for these EDS (endocrine disrupting substances). In the ongoing project genes altered in their regulation by EDS will be identified. The goal is - to use the gene expression levels to identify and characterise potential EDS and environmental samples. - To replace and refine animal experiments according to Russels 3R concept (replacement, refinement, reduction). Therefor, experiments will be carried out on embryos or fish larvae. The model organism is the Japanese Medaka (Oryzias latipes). The medaka offers the possibility to establish monosex population or to identify the genetic sex already during embryogenesis for the analysis of early sex-specifically expressed genes. Due to a co-operation with the University of Nagoya, Japan, transgenic model organism will be used for evaluation of the suitability of these models and comparative analysis.
