Objective: With its background from nuclear technology projects, particle accelerator development, superconductivity research, and expertise in material science, KfK is able to add additional resources to the European fusion effort. Design and R&D for ITER in the areas of Plasma Facing components, Magnets, Tritium Technology (Fuel Cycle), Remote Handling/Maintenance and Safety; Gyrotron, Contributions to Longer Term Programmes , Blanket development for DEMO. Low Activation Materials, Safety and Environment (LTSE). Major facilities : Dual Beam Facility, ITER/TF coil, Coil Test Facility, TOSKA Upgrade, Tritium Laboratory (TLK), Experimental Device for In-Torus Handling (EDITH). Staff (status: 1994). Professionals: 145. Support staff: 152. Yearly budget (expenditure 1994): about 31 MioECU. Management structure: Head of Research Unit : J.E. VETTER. Project Management Group: 7 staff. Collaboration with other institutions. Beside the Euratom-associated Laboratories : German Universities, LAN-TSTA, industrial partners worldwide, activities in the IEA Implementing Agreements on Super conducting Magnets, Materials, Materials, and Nuclear Technologies.
