Description: Das Projekt "Restoring biodiversity in agro-ecosystems: the role of seed origin for vegetation establishment, weed invasions and its biocontrol success" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universite de Fribourg, Departement de Biologie,Ecologie et Evolution durchgeführt. Much of Europe's biological diversity is associated with agricultural habitats and its conservation is dependent on agricultural practices. Restoration of the biological diversity of such land is now supported through various agri-environmental schemes. Over 20 per cent of European farmland (equivalent to 27 million ha) is now subject to management in such schemes. In Switzerland, a large number of compensation strips in agricultural land has been installed during the past 10 years to promote species diversity in arable and grassland systems, such as by sowing wild flower strips ('Buntbrachen') and restricting chemical control measures of undesirable organisms in such semi-natural habitats. Two major problems limit wider acceptance and application of such biodiversity restoration schemes: (i) after a few years, initially high diversity communities turn rapidly intospecies-poor vegetation dominated by a few grass species, thus nullifying its initial purpose, and (ii) such habitats appear to be most vulnerable to colonisation by noxious organisms, especially weeds (e.g. Cirsium arvense and Rumex obtusifolius), which can seriously affect crop yield on adjacent fields. We hypothesise that both.
