Description: Das Projekt "Ein Dieselmotor mit hoher Ausnutzung des Kraftstoffs und geringem Schadstoffausstoss" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Mercedes-Benz Group AG durchgeführt. Objective: The objective of the programme is the determination and evaluation of the individual parameters involved in the formation of a heterogeneous mixture in the combustion chamber of a diesel engine and influencing the form of the fuel spray, fuel spray decay, droplet formation and droplet evaporation. This understanding is important to get new ideas to improve efficiency and the emissions of the diesel engine and to shorten the period of development of those engines. General Information: The programme consists of six main areas: - Determination of jet shape directly behind the nozzle month (harwell combustion Center). - Determination of jet shape and droplet spectrum with and without evaporation in a combustion BAMB (CNPM-CNR Milan). - Determination of local air/fuel ratio and flame Center in a combustion tunnel (CNR-IRC Naples). - Automatic analysis of fuel spray photographs (University Pisa I). - Performance of discriminating theoretical parameter studies using a 3 dimensional mathematical model prepared by imp. College in the frame of EN3E010200-D contract. - Verification of the discoveries made on a real single cylinder test engine (Daimler Benz Stuttgart). Achievements: The results available to date have enabled a significant step forward to be taken in achieving a better understanding of the extremely complex subject of mixture formation and combustion in the diesel engine. It was found that increased injection pressure can reduce the influence of swirl on the mixing process. Peak pressure is less important than pressure history. The main influence on the mixing process was found to be fuel interactions within the fuel spray. The interaction between the spray and the combustion chamber wall was of less importance. This work has shown that a real combustion engine was required to fully evaluate the findings of test devices and measurement techniques.
