Exzellenzcluster 80 (EXC): Ozean der Zukunft

Description: Das Projekt "Exzellenzcluster 80 (EXC): Ozean der Zukunft" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel (GEOMAR), Forschungsbereich 3: Marine Ökologie, Forschungseinheit Evolutionsökologie Mariner Fische durchgeführt. One major but understudied biological effect of marine global change are alterations of host-parasite interactions. This proposal plans to establish the interaction of an ecologically important species, the pipefish Syngnathus typhle, and one major parasites, the trematode Cryptocotyle spp. as a model to study changes in host-parasite dynamics and virulence under global warming. We address clonal differentiation of parasites in their infectivity of pipefish under different temperature. Second, we assess how temperature modulates Cryptocotyle virulence by assessing the reproductive output of infected vs. non-infected pipefish males and females. We start the genetic characterization of host defence by assessing the major histocompatibility region class II gene(s) of S. typhle.
