Description: Das Projekt "Sorption of pollutants by organo-clay complexes" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Hohenheim, Institut für Kulturpflanzenwissenschaften (340), Fachgebiet Düngung und Bodenstoffhaushalt (340i) durchgeführt. Wastewater effluents are frequently contaminated by organic as well as inorganic pollutants. With the shortage of water especially in developing countries, the development of proper methods to remediate these contaminants is a main goal in sustaining the limited water resources e.g. for irrigation purposes. Organo-clay complexes, synthesized by replacing the clays natural inorganic exchangeable cations by organic cations, have the potential to remove heavy metals and organic pollutants at the same time due to increased adsorption properties. In developing and emerging countries this remediation technique can only be successful, if it is cheap and easy to handle and if the necessary materials are available. Therefore, in this study, natural clay sediments (instead defined clay minerals) in combination with selected natural organic cations of different functionalities and compost extracts will be used as organic compounds to prepare organo-clay complexes. These organo-clay complexes will be tested according to their efficiency to remove Pb, Cd and Cr (cationic pollutants), two types of pesticides (insecticide, fungicide) and di-chlorophenol (PCB pollutant) as organic pollutants from aqueous solutions. The factors affecting the adsorption process of the individual pollutants by natural organo-clay complexes will be studied in order to maximize the sorption efficiency. Additionally, competitive sorption effects between the different groups of contaminants (inorganic and organic) will be studied. One main goal of this study is to identify the most promising natural organo-clay complexes suitable for each source of contaminants.
