Radiolarian and sedimentological studies on Neogene sediments of the Benguela Upwelling Systems

Description: Das Projekt "Radiolarian and sedimentological studies on Neogene sediments of the Benguela Upwelling Systems" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Institut für Palöontologie durchgeführt. *This project is the continuation for years 2 and 3 of planned 3 year project. The goal of the project is to study Benguela upwelling system characteristics at both Neogene (0-8 my) and glacial-interglacial scales. The paleoceanographic goals of the project are to better understand the productivity history of the upwelling system and changes in relative productivity between opal and carbonate producers. This work is based on the use of a relatively new method- radiolarian faunal analysis - and its application to pre-Pleistocene time intervals. Other methodologic goals are to compare and better understand the reasons for differences in various surface, midwater and bottom water productivity proxies. Our study makes use of relative abundance changes between surface and midwater radiolarian faunas, opal, carbonate and total organic carbon accumulation rates, stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon, accumulation rate of benthic foraminifera and other proxies.
