Description: Das Projekt "Langzeitsimulation des indonesischen Durchflusses (LITHMOS)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Hamburg, Zentrum für Meeres- und Klimaforschung, Institut für Meereskunde (IfM) durchgeführt. The inter-ocean transport from the tropical and subtropical Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean, known as Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), plays a major role in heat and freshwater fluxes between the two oceans. It influences the strength and timing of the Asian-Australian Monsoon and may feedback to global climate. Because of complex coastline geometry, large numbers of small islands and narrow straits, a high resolution numerical model should be used for modelling this region. A global high resolution numerical model means high computing power and high cost, while a local ocean model with a common subsurface boundary climatology will ignore most of the global information and variability. By combining a global ocean model that has a detailed view of the ITF region with a high resolution local model we shall acquire a high performance result with low cost and retain the global variability (an optimal result with respect to costs and benefits). For this purpose the global model employs a special curvilinear grid system. Combining it with the local model will set a new standard for future ocean modeling in Indonesia. This combination will also be applied to other local models. For the validation of simulations, data from the International Nusantara Stratification and Transport project (INSTANT) will be used.
