Objective: To demonstrate that annual energy savings of 120 MWh and 140 MWh can be achieved in school heating and air conditioning of an office building by the use of innovative multiple fabric blinds, developed by ISE (Institute for Solar Systems of Fraunhofer-Ges.) General Information: In contrast to the conventional permanently mounted systems for saving the energy lost through windows, the multiple fabric roller blind allows the energy flow through a window to be regulated according to the prevailing radiation and temperature conditions. By using different selectively coated fabrics, light is transmitted through the window while the IR component is reflected. During winter days by contrast the whole solar spectrum is transmitted through the window. During winter nights the entire spectrum including the far IR component is reflected back into the room /1/. Further significant advantages in comparison to exterior venetian blinds are the protection of the fabric blind system from the weather and its good accessibility from inside for possible repairs. In the course of the demonstration project. A: all single glazed windows (464 m2) in a school building were equipped with fabric blinds of the type 'roll-up-curtain', and B: each single glazed window (233 m2) on one floor of an eight storey office block was fitted out with a second glass pane which could be opened from inside the building. Fabric blinds for sun-shielding and thermal insulation were mounted in the space between the two glass panes. Achievements: With the thermally insulating fabric blind installed within a double glazed window or mounted as a 'roll-up-curtain' on the inner side of single glazing, the U-value of 5.2 Wm-2K-1 for single glazing is reduced to 1 Wm-2K-1 when the blind is down. When the heating is adapted to take advantage of the solar input, an energy saving of 75 per cent in comparison to single glazing with exterior venetian blinds can be achieved. In addition, the thermally insulating blind offers the advantage of partial or complete darkening in classrooms or offices with a high proportion of computer work stations. When it is used as a sun shield, it has a g-value which is only a quarter of that for a closed exterior venetian blind. The sun shielding roller blind gives lighter and more pleasant interior illumination that an exterior venetian blind, but has an g-value which is twice as high. The whole project and all results are published in the final report EUR 12752 DE/EN, Office for Official Publications of the European Communities, 1990, ISBN 92-826-1427-1.
