Objective: To show, on a widespread basis under real conditions that the heating of residential houses with I.C. Engine driven heat pumps, that up to 50 per cent of primary energy can be saved in comparison with conventional systems. General Information: Fichtel and Sachs AG has developed an I.C. Engine driven fuel oil and natural gas heat pump with a heating power of 20 kw. The engine-compressor unit is a special development of Fichtel and Sachs, also the microprocessor control equipment. As demonstration units 40 heat pumps (27 fuel oil, 13 natural gas) were installed in residential houses in the Schweinfurt region. The houses have a theoretical heat demand of between 20 and 60 kw. Outside air is used as the heat source. Installation was carried out by handicraft companies under supervision of Fichtel and Sachs. Each of the heat pumps was supplied with measuring instruments for data processing. All heat pumps are connected to existing boilers. They are working in the monovalent mode in small houses and in the bivalent mode in larger houses. Achievements: The first heat pump was put into operation in December 1981, the last in September 1982. On an average the heat pumps have worked during the contract period, 2,503 h/a; the longest hours of operation came to more than 6,000 up to June 1983. The PER (primary energy ratio) of the fuel oil heat pumps amount to 1,32 a yearly average, the natural gas heat pumps have 1,25 in average; the efficiencies of the burner-boiler system are below 70 per cent. Series units will be equipped with only one cylinder compressor of increased capacity, improving the PER from 1,32 to 1,42. Noise problems were settled satisfactorily; waste gas emission must be further improved together with the quality of some components. Regarding the present fuel oil and natural gas prices, payback periods below 5 years are possible, when the saving potential is higher than 4,000 L/a in bivalent-alternative parallel installations. The most economical use of the heat pump is in business (commercial) buildings with an energy consumption of from 10-20,000 L of fuel oil or m3 natural gas. However, before launching the heat pumps on the market final development work must be carried out particularly to improve the quality of components. For large volume production a cost intensive incoming goods quality control is to be introduced. The two-cylinder compressor is also to be changed. Errors in installation led to the development of a control device which allows the checking of connections and functions prior to commissioning. All 40 heat pumps are now operating satisfactorily and will continue until 1990. Demonstration targets were achieved. Since May 1981, 17 patents have been granted and 27 prepared regarding technical solutions which remain to be evaluated before they can be used for the heat pump. NB: The information above characterize the state of the heat pump technique in the second half year of 1983.
