Improvement of the Economic Sustainability of Natural Forest Management in the Tropics

Description: Das Projekt "Improvement of the Economic Sustainability of Natural Forest Management in the Tropics" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Hamburg, Arbeitsbereich für Weltforstwirtschaft und Institut für Weltforstwirtschaft des Friedrich-Löffler-Institut, Bundesforschungsinstitut für Tiergesundheit durchgeführt. A key issue of the Institute for World Forestry is research and scientific decision support in the fields of sustainable forest management and forest conservation in the tropics in the context of a continuously diminishing forest cover and global climate change. In this respect the project 'Improvement of the Economic Sustainability of Natural Forest Management in the Tropics' intends to deliver scientific information on the economic sustainability of natural forest management via case studies in the project partner countries Vietnam, Nepal and Suriname. The project aims at the development of recommendations for management optimisation and increased benefits from sustainable natural forest management, and by that making sustainable forest management more attractive compared to destructive forest utilization schemes. For this goal the key question is to be answered: What additional costs and/or efforts must be carried to obtain economically sustainable forest management of natural forests under different resource demands and respective management approaches? Next to the cost-benefit calculation of respective management options, the consideration of critical interlinkages between conservation and development aims and pro-climate forestry goals are focussed at. For this, approaches for forest management optimisation (close-to-nature forestry, reduced impact logging, management of degraded and secondary forests among others) and alternative land-use models (forested-landscape mosaics, intensive and extensive forest management), market-orientated evaluations (certification, product-value chain analysis, payment for environmental services) and the integration of climate-protection goals are assessed and evaluated in consideration of micro- (rural income support) and macro-economic impacts. Legal and organisational framework conditions for sustainable forest management are considered; existing successful and unsuccessful management approaches are evaluated.
