In 1991 BMBF has implemented the research programme for applied research in the area of biotope and species and 5 inetrdisciplinary projects have been set up. After the starting period of 5 years, an investigation progress and current results of this initiative was carried out. To document new approaches, more than 100 questionnaires have been send to researchers in all over Germany to indicate their current area of reserach, the methodologies, the main research questions and objects (population, biotope, biocoenotic approach, landscape as research targets etc.). In discussion groups and interviews the positions towards actual deficits in conservation research have been clarified. The analyses of project desciptions lead to an systematic (Aufgliederung) of research approaches, further analyses were based on this structure. In a futher more detailed stage of analyses, 4 areas of applied research have been worked out more profoundly: 1. Ecology of streams and rivers. 2. Conservation research for woodlands and forest. 3. Biocoenology. 4. Ecological analyses of landscapes as target units. The study can not be seen as a propper reserach activity. Its the attempt to condens the state of current research activities and to make the djungel of disciplines methodologies and institutions a little more understandable for broader conceptional work in ecological research. The Study was set up to cover the research activities all over Germany and is trying to show the links to international research programmes.Leading questions: - Logical structure of research approaches in Germany, - What are the objectives and innovative approaches in applied nature conservation research in Germany, - How to optimize the exchange experiences and results in completary research programmes- what should be the main subjects in further research activities for the BMBF national programmes.
