Description: Das Projekt "Concept evaluation of low cost lithium polymer battery system for electric vehicles" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Mercedes-Benz Group AG durchgeführt. General Information/Objectives: Lithium polymer is recognised at one of the best performing, least toxic, potentially safest and cheapest battery technologies. This technology is therefore one of the most promising for the EV application. This project concerns industrial process research and lithium-ion polymer battery development for the EV application. The project also concerns system design, implementation and test of an electric car equipped with an integrated lithium-ion polymer battery system with the following specification: Energy Content: 20 kWh Power Content: 30 kW Weight: 200 kg max. Volume: 125 l max. Technical Approach The technical realisation of the lithium-ion polymer battery for electric vehicles specifically addresses: The design of cell and battery components Optimisation of the manufacturing technology Development of the battery system peripheral equipment (electronic control, thermal management) Test and control of batteries (performance, safety, cell balancing) Expected Achievements and Exploitation The project passes through a sequence of design, manufacturing and test analysis prior to the implementation and evaluation of the complete battery system in an electric vehicle. The following steps and advances are expected: Specification and test of a new process for high volume/low cost lithium-ion polymer battery manufacturing. Manufacturing of larger quantities of 40-50 Ah cells. Laboratory and bench test of 40-50 Ah cells according to EUCAR test procedures. Simulation of cell behaviour under load conditions, cooling system sizing, and device for a standardised EUCAR electric vehicle. Design and specification of new electronic control system for lithium battery systems in electric vehicles. Implementation, test and demonstration of the battery system in an electric vehicle. Demonstration of an operation range of more than 200 km at 80 km/hour. Documentation confirming a system lifetime of more than 100,000 km. Documentation confirming that the Car of Tomorrow short term development goals for advanced electric vehicle batteries have been achieved with the system developed. Prime Contractor: Danionics A/S; Odense; Denmark.
