Long-term comparative study of oligotrophication process in for European lakes

Description: Das Projekt "Long-term comparative study of oligotrophication process in for European lakes" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Konstanz, Fachbereich Biologie, Sonderforschungsbereich 454 "Bodenseelitoral" durchgeführt. In this project we propose a comparative analysis of the phytoplankton and zooplankton dynamics in four pre-alpine European lakes in order to better understand the response of plankton populations to oligotrophication and the interaction of oligotrophication and climate variability. We will compare the plankton dynamics in Lake Geneva, Constance, Zürich and Walen. Like many other pre-alpine European lakes, the four lakes chosen went through a history of eutrophication and olgotrophication in the last century. They are all rather similar in respect to their morphology and origin. Furthermore, the lakes are situated very close to each other, so that it can be expected that they are exposed to a very similar meteorological forcing. Extensive data sets of phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance and species composition are available for all four lakes. These data sets each covering more than 20 years represent an extremely valuable resource which has not been fully explored yet. The proposed comparative analysis of the plankton time series of these four lakes will make use of this resource and is hence ideally suited to study the oligothrophication process and the interaction of oligotrophication with climate variability. This work will consist in two major steps: 1) identification of long-term changes characteristic of each lake; 2) between lakes comparison of these changes. This would enable us to distinguish similarities and differences between the long-term development and to discriminate lake-specific responses from those resulting from more general dynamic related to oligotrophication process.
