Description: Das Projekt "SUSDIET - Understanding consumer behaviour to encourage a (more) sustainable food choice (German part)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut, Bundesforschungsinstitut für Ländliche Räume, Wald und Fischerei, Institut für Marktanalyse und Agrarhandelspolitik durchgeführt. Aim of the research is twofold: first, identification of promising ways of communicating Carbon Footprints (CFP) to consumers, and second, to identify reasons for the attitude behaviour gap with regard to sustainability issues and particularly CFP. The research will combine quantitative and qualitative methods in a consecutive manner. A literature review on CFP labelling, on existing and earlier CFP schemes as well as on the attitude behaviour gap are the starting point of the research. By means of an online survey relative preferences for different forms of labelling and claims of Carbon Footprint will be analysed with representative sample of the consumers in 5 selected countries. Choice experiments will be immediately followed by a questionnaire. The questionnaire will focus on reasons for the attitude behaviour gap. Based on the results of the online survey in-depth interviews will be conducted with a small number of participants in three selected countries. The aim of this second research step is to better understand the gap between consumers' attitudes and behaviour with regard to purchase of sustainable food. The results will contribute a) to a better understanding of shortcomings of earlier approaches of carbon footprint labelling (CFP) and will elaborate recommendations for promising ways of communicating of CFP either by labels or by claims, and b) to the existing work on the reasons for the attitude behaviour gap. In doing this, the results will feed into other work packages and tasks of the transnational project. The results of different tasks and questions with regard to consumers attitudes and preferences on sustainable food worked on by different partners will be merged in order to map consumer preferences at a transnational level. Cooperation will particularly important with other partners and countries in which the web survey and the in-depth interviews will be carried out.
