Sub project: Climate Cycles and Events in the Plio-Pleistocene of the Yermak Plateau, Arctic Ocean: Causes and Consequences

Description: Das Projekt "Sub project: Climate Cycles and Events in the Plio-Pleistocene of the Yermak Plateau, Arctic Ocean: Causes and Consequences" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, Institut für Chemie und Biologie des Meeres durchgeführt. Long-term climate changes of the Earth and in particular the Northern Hemisphere glaciation are related to the various orbital cycles (23,000, 41,000, 100,000 years). Up to now, hi resolution research of these cycles was restricted to approx. the last 300,000 years in Arctic Ocean sediments (only a few cores exist with sufficient biogenic material, restricted age control, extreme complexity of the sedimentary record). This project aims to use the latest advances in knowledge of the sedimentary environment, and apply a non-evasive analytical method, the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanner, for very high-resolution investigations of ODP sites 910 and 911 (Yermak Plateau, Arctic Ocean). To fully understand and interpret the XRF Scanner record the detailed investigation of a large number of selected discrete samples is necessary. The most sophisticated analysis and quantification methods will be applied to understand the inorganic geochemistry, lithology and mineral assemblage, and to calibrate the relative XRF Scanner data. Our final goal will be to better understand the sedimentary and paleoenvironmental conditions and to derive climate changes of the Northern Hemisphere through the last 3-4 million years.
