Viskose Wirkung auf Rotorblaetter von Windkraftanlagen

Description: Das Projekt "Viskose Wirkung auf Rotorblaetter von Windkraftanlagen" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, Institut für Entwurfsaerodynamik durchgeführt. General Information/Objectives: The objective of the project is to analyze and clarify the aerodynamic mechanisms underlying the production of blade forces on rotors of wind turbines. For this state-of-the-art Navier-Stokes solvers with appropriate transition and turbulence modelling will be utilized. Dynamic stall and 3-Dimensional stall will be addressed. A parametrical study will be undertaken in order to elucidate the influence of aspect ratio, twist, chord- and thickness-distribution on the stall characteristics of rotating blades. Technical Approach: The Navier-Stokes algorithms will be validated against measurements from the available literature and previous Joule projects. Of particular interest will be the assessment of the influence of turbulence models and transition criteria on the solution. Both conventional airfoil shapes and special-purpose wind turbine blades will be considered. It is expected that this task may form the basis for adapting and improving the algorithms to handle massively separated flow fields. Dynamic stall calculations will be performed using 2D and quasi-3D Navier-Stokes algorithms. The most important parameters influencing dynamic stall characteristics are the mean angle of attack and the reduced frequency. To analyze the effect of rotation on 3-dimensional stall characteristics of wind turbine blades a series of Navier-Stokes calculations will be carried out for various blade geometries. As such calculations are very computing demanding, requiring in the order of 1 million mesh points for one blade, only steady calculations will be performed. Of special interest is to clarify the influence of blade planform, twist and airfoil type. Expected Achievements and Exploitation: It is expected that the project will result in useful information from the following aspects: - Clarification of the main mechanisms of the production of aerodynamic forces on rotating blades. - Parametrical study in order to come up with a (simple) strategy for how to exploit the obtained results in existing design tools used by blade designers. - Validation of the capability of existing CFD codes to calculate viscous flow fields subject to dynamic stall and massive separation. The two first points are of high importance for blade- and wind turbine manufacturers as they result in a better understanding of how existing wind turbines work aerodynamically as well as giving guidelines for design and optimization of new blade configurations. The last point results in useful information relevant for other industries dealing with aerodynamic machinery, such as manufacturers of aircraft, propellers and turbo machinery. Prime Contractor: Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, Department of Fluid Mechanics; Lyngby/Denmark.
