Umweltmanagement bei seismischen Untersuchungen des Meeresbodens

Description: Das Projekt "Umweltmanagement bei seismischen Untersuchungen des Meeresbodens" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Trier, European Association for Environmental Management Education - Focal Point Trier -, Europäisches Diplom in Umweltwissenschaften durchgeführt. The aim of this project is to develop an Environmental Management System (EMS) for Shell's marine seismic exploration surveys. This will create a generic management system which is compatible not only with the existing internal system currently in use within Shell but also with contractors and industry associates. This is to be used as a management tool in Shell's seismic operations to, if possible, prevent, reduce or mitigate possible negative environmental impacts of Shell's work. The system will be promoted to the contractors and industries involved. The limits of the EMS consist of the ships themselves, the sea on which they sail, the ship harbour and the equipment used. Possible negative harmful effects to the marine environment include migration or death of some fish species or their eggs; potential disturbance and/or deafening of marine mammals; pollution of waters by waste/sewage discharge; and failure to address existing international legislation, e.g. MARPOL; and current national guidelines belonging to such bodies as the UK Offshore Operators Association. These procedures are to be examined in the light of their implications for marine seismic operations. Thus the existing legislatory framework can be incorporated into the proposed environmental management system. There is a need for such a project in Shell since the existing management system for seismic activities covers only Health and Safety hazards and effects. It contains the required managerial aspect since it is to be used as a management tool, and the European context since Shell operates in not only a European but a World market.
