Description: Das Projekt "Cost optimizing of large-scale offshore wind farms" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Stadtwerke Rostock AG durchgeführt. General Information/Objectives: The project shall investigate the technical and economical possibilities of a large scale offshore wind farm in the range of 200 to 500 MW in the Danish waters of the Baltic Sea and the Langeland Belt. Options for implementation of cost-optimised large-scale offshore wind farms in 3 areas through field investigations of the wind regime and geological properties, will be investigated optimising: - the wind farm layout, - the foundation design - the design of large wind turbines (higher than 1MW) for offshore conditions, - the grid connection design, - installation, operation and maintenance costs. The economic consequences in relation to investments in wind farms, reinforcement of the grid and grid connection and operation and maintenance costs shall be analysed within an uncertainty of 10 per cent . Technical Approach Potential sites have been identified. The potential has been estimated based on the identified areas in the report from the Danish Offshore Wind Turbine Committee, formed by Danish authorities, power companies and interest groups. Three new 48 m offshore measuring masts have been installed in the areas. One 48m mast on the shoreline has been installed on the southernmost tip of Falster. Two existing masts have been renewed. The data will be compiled in a database at Riso and analysed. A review of geotechnical and grid connection aspects has been performed. The field investigations and technical/economical study have been initiated, including detailed studies of possible designs of large offshore wind turbines, foundation designs, grid connection etc. The study is supplemented by information about offshore prospects from England and Germany. Expected Achievements and Exploitation The project will produce important information on the flow characteristics of offshore wind farms, including loads on the wind turbines as well as additional experimental evidence on the power performance of wind farms. It is already the experience of the Vindeby project that some of the special features of these turbines will become standard for large turbines, also for onshore sites. The large potential for offshore wind power in Denmark as well as in the rest of Europe can, if it is exploited, lead to increased employment in the industry and fuel savings and less emissions from conventional power plants. Experience from construction of offshore wind farms in Denmark and other Member States will be evaluated and adapted to the needs of the present project. Recommendations will be included in the final report with specific guidelines for planning and establishing of offshore wind turbines.
