Leading Questions: (a) What were the important circulation modes during the two analysed periods (1700-1860; 1861-1995)? (b) What are the characteristics of the circulation variability over the full 215-year period? (c) What links can be postulated between circulation patterns, temperature and precipitation? (d) Are the dominating SST and sea-ice patterns (as boundary conditions) consistent with the observed climate processes? Abstract: Specific Objectives: 1. Enhancement and analysis of existing monthly mean sea-level pressure (MSLP) maps over Europe for the Early Instrumental Period (EIP, 1780-1860), in combination with similar analyses for the period 1861-present, in order to: -assess whether or not circulation models were similar in the two periods (1780-1860, 1861-1995), - characterise circulation variability over the full 215-year period, - where possible, establish links between circulation patterns and temperature and precipitation distributions, and compare the two periods, - identify 'anomalous' months for the subject of Objective 3. 2. Objective assessment of monthly climatic charts over Europe reconstructed from documentary information during the early decades of the EIP by comparison with (a) the charts constructed under Objective 1 (from instrumental information) and (b) appropriate tree-ring data for the summer months. 3. On the basis of the anomalous periods identified under Objective 1, reconstruction of daily synoptic charts for these months in the EIP. On the basis of the validated, and selective methodology resulting from Objective 2, reconstruction of monthly MSLP distributions for the Late Maunder Minimum (LMM, 1675-1715) from documentary information. Assessment of circulation modes with reference to the total period 1780-present, and also with reference long temperature and precipitation series. 5. On the basis of the analysis under Objective 4, the identification of periods of extreme circulation modes to subject to reconstruction of 5-daily (LMM) synoptic charts.
