Greenland Sea Convection Mechanisms and their Climatic Implications

Description: Das Projekt "Greenland Sea Convection Mechanisms and their Climatic Implications" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Hamburg, Zentrum für Meeres- und Klimaforschung, Institut für Meereskunde (IfM) durchgeführt. CONVECTION is an EU-funded fifth framework project. The main objective of CONVECTION is to determine to what extent open ocean deep water production can be assessed by a combination of operational remote sensing, modelling, and a modest amount of field measurements. CONVECTION seeks to understand the physics underlying the convection process and how this process links with global climatic factors. The Institute for Oceanography, Hamburg, is responsible for detailed high- resolution model estimates of oceanic convection in the vicinity of the Nordbukta and Odden region. Oceanic convection is simulated in an ocean slice by means of a non- hydrostatic convection model (NCM) coupled with a hydro-thermodynamic ice model. The NCM will allow the simulation of a local ice export from the Nordbukta region into the Odden. Another main tool is a mixed layer model (MLM) which will be used to predict convective water mass formation for a basin integral (i.e. the entire Greenland Sea is considered as one single water column) under realistic atmospheric forcing. The MLM should answer the following questions: a) would today's Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian (GIN) Sea system convect deeply if exposed to the atmospheric forcing of the 1960s (when NAO was low)? b) how long would it take to convert the system from present shallow convection to deep convection?
