Description: Das Projekt "Sustainable environmental management strategies in South China - towards 2000 and beyond - a case study in Shenzhen" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie gGmbH durchgeführt. Objective: The main objectives are as follows: - To identify the essential core socio-economic and environmental problems induced by resource exploitation and accelerated economic growth. - To assess the regional productive capacity, the resource bearing capacity, the environmental capacity and the regulating capacity of environmental management. - To identify feasible solutions to these problems within the constraints of the study area and to provide technical and policy options for the decision maker for the purpose of attaining sustainable environmental management. - To show the possibilities and methods of the extended applications of this case study to other regions in the coastal zone of South China or even in other developing countries having similar conditions. General Information: The key activities envisaged are: - Environmental quality monitoring, socio-economic survey and the investigation of the present state of water resources in addition to planned exploitation schemes of new water sources will be completed within the first 10 months. - Existing literature will also be collected and reviewed to provide up to date knowledge and information. - Predictive models for hydrology, supply-demand equilibrium of water resources, water quality and management, multi-objective decision making, etc., will be developed or modified from existing models as the major predictive and analytical tools for the study. - A database management system will be set up to standardize data file formats and input and output criteria. Achievements: Expected Outcome The work carried out in this project should provide a feasible Decision Support System (DSS) methodologies for the assessment of regional productive and resource bearing capacities as well as environmental regulating capacities with particular reference to water resources and associated pollution control. Remote sensing, GIS and material flow theory as well as conventional survey techniques and databases will be utilized to provide a characterization inventory of environmental and socio-economic indices and to define action priorities. Particular emphasis will be placed on water quality issues as these are decisive to allow or prevent land use activities and to maintain health ecosystems. The project will generate innovative and appropriate technologies for the support of sustainable environmental management in developing countries.
